A Lesson Learned

The Mujeres Amigas December luncheon on Wednesday was a full house.  I was so happy to see many old friends there who each came up to welcome me back with warm words and warm hugs.  If December is any indication, the January luncheon will be overflowing when the rest of the Snowbirds arrive in Manzanillo and flock to reacquaint themselves with old friends.

After those dull dreary days last week, the sun is back in its full glory, reigning over the brilliant blue, cloudless skies, and the temperatures remain hot.  Beach walks about 4 in the afternoon after a swim and still wearing the wet bathing suit makes my walk very comfortable regardless of the heat.  

Tina and Charlie arrived in Club Santiago a week ago.   It was great to visit them at their condo for drinks, then they, another couple and I, piled into Charlie’s fabulous van to head off for dinner.  His vehicle has no driver’s seat, allowing Charlie to drive his wheel chair up the van’s sliding ramp and directly into the empty driver’s seat space from where he drives the vehicle from his new bells and whistles wheel chair.  Awesome! 

The choice of restaurant for dinner that evening was one I didn’t even know existed!  Only a short drive (or a long beach walk) it is a delightful place on Miramar Beach called Mar Celeste.  You walk into thisopen, airy space, past comfortable looking sofas and chairs arranged beside full bookcases and on to a raised level restaurant overlooking the Pacific.  The ambiance, service and food were beyond reproach.  I look forward to more evenings spent there sipping a margarita while watching the sun set! 

A new eating spot within walking distance is “Crazy Wings” in the little village of Miramar which is directly across the highway from the entrance to Club Santiago.  Open only from 6 pm, Friday through Monday, this little family-run place is already getting rave reviews and is on my bucket list. 

One of the vendors at the Mujeres Amigas luncheon this week, makes all her own natural ingredient lotions and creams, including a lotion that dispels the ever-annoying insects while being good to your skin.  She is opening a shop in Miramar around the corner from Crazy Wings and close to a long-time popular taqueria (taco restaurant).  

In the same area, you can find a great fresh fish shop, and across the street is a fruit and vegetable shop.  A full gym is also located there. 

Perhaps Miramar village is awakening to the market potential is has from its close proximity to one of the most popular tourist areas around – Club Santiago.  Club Santiago is located just outside of the Manzanillo suburban town area called Santiago.   Club Santiago residents have limited eating places or retail outlets unless you take a bus or taxi ride into the town of Santiago or further. One can only hope Miramar will begin to change that to more localized shopping and eating. 

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner.  I have no plans for Christmas dinner yet and may spend it alone, which will not be a hardship.  Past Christmases in Mexico were often just Don and me, as, without family around and not being religious, it was simply another day in Paradise.    

Being alone for the first time in my life when Don died in 2019 just before Covid changed all our lives, confirmed my believe that positivity defeats pessimism… but that it can be easier said than done. 

I found that again those past few dreary days when the low pressure affects my usual positive mood.  On one of those days I had sent what turned out to be a pessimistic-sounding e-mail to my dear friend in Calgary who immediately wrote back, “This doesn’t sound like you!” 

Her note prompted me to have a hard talk with myself and I didn’t like the truth I was telling myself!  I had no reason to feel down because of the weather!  I was acting like a spoiled brat.   

I shook myself out of the downer by allowing myself the luxury to send the whole drizzly afternoon indulging myself eating popcorn and watching movies on Netflix – a treat on a rainy afternoon anywhere.   The indulgence made me felt much better again .  

There may be more ‘feeling sorry for myself’ moments ahead for whatever reason, but I won’t allow them to chase away my knowledge of how fortunate I am to have this life I have chosen to live, in the way I have chosen to live it.   

In an earlier blog, I said no lifestyle is Utopia, each one has its downsides.   Learning how to cope with the downsides is the challenge.  That could be something as simple as treating yourself to popcorn and a movie or getting obsessed with a jigsaw puzzle, or taking a long walk - whatever works for you. 

I realize that not many at my stage of life, or even younger, have so much to be grateful for.  And every day, regardless of what that day may bring, I will appreciate my life, immensely.
